Session types

This is your chance to plug your expertise into an energizing and immersive infrastructure experience. Scroll below to find the session setup that works best for your idea. Please note that this is only the selection of a preference; the Technical Program Committee ultimately determines the final session type designation for all presentations at the event.

  • All 60-90 minute session proposals that are not for panels, short courses, or workshops. Includes formats such as industry & practice sessions, curated symposia, full 60-90 minute presentations of case studies, etc. It also encompasses any proposals that are for sessions “outside the box,” which are encouraged.

  • Multidisciplinary and diverse teams discuss, debate, or present knowledge on a specific topic or project.

Goal: To create open conversations and foster the exchange of knowledge.

Structure: 60-90 minutes (determined by Technical Program Committee). Panels should not exceed four speakers for a total of five participants including the moderator. May include an introduction, initial remarks from panelists, moderator questions, audience Q&A, and a summary.

Examples: Discussions on industry trends, expert insights, case study presentation.

  • A focused, instructor-led training session designed to teach specific skills on a single topic. These sessions are designed for efficient learning and offer practical takeaways — without the time commitment of a full program.

Goal: To deliver targeted education on a specialized subject, helping participants build or enhance specific skills. Ideal for professional development or deepening expertise in a particular area. Content is curated by the ASCE Continuing Education Department separately from other reviews to ensure high instructional value.

Structure: Short courses usually run for two to four hours and can only be scheduled exclusively on Monday, March 1, 2027, or Friday, March 5, 2027. Each session is led by one or two instructors and will require separate registration. ASCE Continuing Education will provide coordination.

Examples: Topics may include technical skills training (such as structural modeling or hydrology tools), regulatory and standards-based instruction, and real-world insights into design challenges, project management, innovation, and outcomes from the presenter’s perspective.

  • An interactive and collaborative session designed to engage participants in hands-on learning, problem-solving, or creative work around a particular topic or challenge. It fosters deep participation and often results in a tangible output.

Goal: To encourage active collaboration and knowledge exchange among attendees through activities, discussions, or group work. The focus is on solving specific problems or developing practical solutions in a facilitated environment.

Structure: Workshops usually last four to eight hours and can only be scheduled on Monday, March 1, 2027. Led by one to three subject matter experts, they will require separate registration. Coordinated by ASCE Continuing Education, workshops may follow a half-day or full-day format.

Examples: Workshop topics often focus on advanced technical skills and applied learning—such as scenario-based risk analysis, life-cycle analysis, geotechnical design procedures, structural condition assessment, soil characterization, or collaborative project management planning.

  • 5-minute presentation included in a lightning round session.

  • 15-minute oral presentation with a visual presentation component that occurs within a 60- to 90-minute session.

  • Posters will be displayed in the Exhibit Hall during specified poster sessions.
